“Bracero” translates to “farm laborer,” “farmhand,” or “manual laborer.” The term comes from the Spanish word brazo (arm) literally meaning “one who works using his arms. The bracero program was created to fill labor shortages in agriculture and the railroads caused by World War II. It eventually became the largest guest worker program in U.S. history.

While providing economic opportunities, many workers faced exploitation, harsh conditions, and racial discrimination.
